CANSTRUCTION TO HELP
LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES IN OUR AREA

Canstruction Projects - yes, CANstruction projects. (Search YouTube for “Canstruction” or check out Google images……and be prepare to be amazed.) While our structures may not be as intricate or involved as some you might see on line, knowing there is an increase in needs at local food pantries and soup kitchens, you are invited to participate with us to design and build (canstruct) something out of cans and/or boxes offood at Chautauqua Mall on Saturday October 15th from 12 – 4pm.

At the end of the day therewill be awards handed out and the food will be appropriately distributed to area agenciesthat need it. You may select who receives the food you use to build your project. The day willwind up with a joyful celebration of appetizers, beverages, awards, activities and music at the Alpha Café in the Gateway Center, 31 Water Street, Jamestown 4PM-6PM.

Please challenge other organizations, sports teams, churches, etc to join you for this day of fun filled community service. Have them contact Charlie Hodges at 716 969 6407 to register.

This event is being sponsored by the Upper New York Conference of the United Methodist Church with the purpose of raising awareness to the issues of hunger in our area as well as provide food to area food pantries.

1st Annual Charity Golf Classic

The volunteers of St. Susan Center are organizing the 1st Annual Charity Golf Classic to benefit St. Susan Center soup kitchen. The soup kitchen provides a balanced, nutritious meal, seven days a week to those in need. They’re able to do this with donated food and funds. Every dollar donated to St. Susan Center is spent in service to the greater Jamestown community. Over 60% of the guests eat only one meal per day on a regular basis. The Center served over 85,000 meals in 2010 and already there has been an 10.66% increase for 2011.

The Classic will be held August 7, 2011 at Chautauqua Golf Club on the Lake Course. The format will be a four-person team scramble with a shotgun start at 2:00pm. Registration will begin at 12:30pm. We will be offering hot dogs, snacks and beverages at multiple locations on the course. A variety of delicious soups and sandwiches along with a dessert will be served at the conclusion of play. For your enjoyment, entertainment will be provided by Harbour Knights.

Your support and generosity will be a blessing to you and to the guests of St. Susan Center.
Individual entries are welcome and we will work to form a team for you. Please send entry form along with fees payable to St. Susan Center as soon as possible with REGISTRATION DEADLINE of August 1, 2011. SOUP AND A SONG MUSICAL FUND-RAISER

The winter 2011 “Soup and a Song” fund-raising series of programs, combining concerts by popular local musical groups with “open-mic” opportunities for other performers, will conclude on March 25th at St. Susan Center, Jamestown’s soup kitchen. The January and February events exceeded expectations, raising a combined $1,079, or the cost of 431 meals. The music series also has served to raise awareness of what St. Susan Center is, and the vital role it serves within the community.

For the modest admission price of $7, attendees are treated, not only to a fine evening of live musical entertainment, but a meal consisting of hearty soup, several varieties of breads, crackers, desserts, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Proceeds from the Soup and a Song series benefit St. Susan Center, which in 2010 served 85,000 meals to a diverse client base that extends beyond the unemployed and homeless to include young parents, teens, seniors, children and persons who are challenged physically, mentally or emotionally. Sue Colwell, St. Susan’s director, explained the importance of the music series to the Center: “I often hear people express their heartbreak for the men, women and children who do not have enough to eat. However, the greater tragedy would be if St. Susan Center did not exist at all. Therefore, the Center and our guests are being blessed through the generosity of local musicians, who are fighting hunger on a daily basis.”

Logistical support for the Soup and a Song program has been provided by Trinity Guitars, the Jamestown-based purveyor of fine stringed instruments and audio gear. Trinity Guitars owner, Jim Holler, who coordinates the talent for the events and provides the sound system, credits the generosity of local musicians for the program’s success. “I often think that the most valuable gift one person can give another is the gift of their time,” Holler said. “Everyone is pressed for time these days, and it takes many hours to rehearse for a gig, pack and unpack gear, commit to a date when your talent is being donated gratis, and then keep that commitment. I’ve been blown away by the support my friends, customers and fellow musicians have given St. Susan Center, and we’re already making plans for the second series of events.”

Featured on March 25th will be Grampa Snazzy. The band, which has been a popular fixture on the local live music scene since 2007, features 2004 Chautauqua Lake Idol winner, Sue Waite, on vocals, Jim Foti on bass guitar, and Tom Swanson on guitar. New to the band, but by no means to the area music scene, are guitarist/vocalist Karl Lydell and drummer Julie Morgan. In addition to original material, the group will play a selection of blues and southern gospel tunes inspired by the likes of Leon Russell, Maria Muldaur and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The Soup and a Song events are held at St. Susan Center’s facility at Gateway Center, also known to Jamestown residents as the former Chautauqua Hardware Building, at 31 Water Street. The public is admitted beginning at 6:00 pm, with the open-mic segment of the programs beginning at 6:10. Featured entertainers begin playing at 7:40pm, and the events conclude at 9:00pm. Soup will be served until 8:00pm.

Since open-mic time slot availabilities have filled quickly in the past, musicians interested in performing on March 25th should contact Jim Holler promptly, at (716) 665-4490, or sign up in person at Trinity Guitars, 800 West Third Street in Jamestown. The open-mics are geared toward acoustic-based performers of folk, blues or country selections suitable for a venue such as St. Susan Center.

Basket Fair

Eighth Annual St. Susan Center Basket Fair

Spring Ahead is the theme of this year’s Basket Fair. On Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm we will once again be holding our Basket Fair at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville. With beautiful baskets and gift certificates for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, families, Easter, little ones, those who love to dine out, green thumbs, the home, the car, the crafty, sports fans and more.

Its St. Susan Center’s Eighth Annual Basket Fair and its affordable and fun for the whole family. Just $5 for 10 tickets! There will be basket prizes, gift certificates, a door prize and grand prizes. Rainbow the Clown will be making balloon animals and face painting along with the Apron Lady whose pockets will be filled with toys. There will also be a kids’ corner with Easter baskets for young children.

NEW THIS YEAR! We’ve added a raffle of a 32’’ flat screen TV combined with an XBOX 360 KINECT. Tickets are on sale now for this raffle for just $5 and can be purchased at St. Susan Center or the day of the basket fair.

A sandwich buffet will be provided for $8 per person and $6 for children. For groups of 8 or more, attending tables may be reserved.

For those who want to participate but are unable to attend the Basket Fair, a catalog of baskets and order form will allow you to pre-purchase tickets and make your selections. The basket fair committee will place your tickets and inform you if you’ve won. The catalog will be available at the Center on Monday March 28th after 9:00 am or by visiting our website at www.stsusancenter.org.

The monthly “Soup and a Song” fund-raising series of programs, combining concerts by popular local musical groups with “open-mic” opportunities for other performers, will continue on Friday, February 25th at St. Susan Center, Jamestown’s soup kitchen. January’s inaugural event proved very popular, with all of the open-mic time slots filled, and a jam-packed audience in attendance to support the Center. The program netted more than $600, enough to provide 242 meals for St. Susan clients.

For the modest admission price of $7, attendees are treated, not only to a fine evening of live musical entertainment, but a meal consisting of hearty soup, several varieties of breads, crackers, desserts, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Proceeds from the Soup and a Song series benefit St. Susan Center, which in 2010 served 85,000 meals to a diverse client base that extends beyond the unemployed and homeless to include young parents, teens, seniors, children and persons who are challenged physically, mentally or emotionally. “Thanks to generous community support,” said Sue Colwell, St. Susan Center’s executive director, “we can provide hot, nutritious meals seven days a week, 361 days a year. The Center could not keep its doors open for a single day without that support. We are blessed with a community with heart, and that’s what makes us who we are,” Colwell said.

Open-mic registration is even stronger for the February event, and includes a number of new names who want to show their support for St. Susan Center.”

Featured performers on February 25th will be The Old Dawg Jazz Trio, featuring three veterans of the local music scene: Steve Strom, Steve Eng and Mark Davis. The trio performs a sweet, finger-snapping and toe-tapping mix of swing jazz, western swing, gospel, blues and pop tunes. Mandolin player and vocalist Steve Strom is a talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Steve Eng is featured on jazz guitar and vocals, and
Mark Davis demonstrates his rhythmic and solo talents on the upright bass.

The March 25th featured band will be Grandpa Snazzy

Think 5 cents isn't a lot? It is when you turn your bottles and cans into cash. Why not drop them off at the Southside Redemption Center at 1752 Foote Avenue Extension, Jamestown, NY. Their hours of business are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Or you can stop by St. Susan Center, 31 Water Street, Jamestown, and drop them off between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Any bottles and/or cans dropped off and designated for St. Susan Center will be credited to us.

Pie and Cheese Sales

The holiday season is now upon us. Here at St. Susan we are beginning work on two more fundraisers to help us with our expenses here at the center.

For Thanksgiving, we will be having a pie sale. There will be a choice of three 9" pies: Apple, Pumpkin, or Pecan. We will also be having a trio of tart size pies, one of each flavor for sale.

In December we will be having our cheese sale again. We are looking forward to a very successful sale.

We will be sending out our newsletter in October and there will be order blanks for both of these events in there. If you don't get the newsletter, you can go online to read it and copy off the order blanks. You can also call us at 716-664-2253, Ext. 4 and we will make sure you get the order blanks that you need.

Souper Summer Event Update

The Souper Summer Event for St. Susan Center was such a great success! The number of people that came through was unbelievable. We had some wonderful soups, entertainment and a great opportunity to meet the community around us. After expenses, we realized a profit of just a little over $4,900.00! That's almost $1,700.00 more than last year's event.

We have already had several restaurants sign up for next year and have reserved their soup. We also have 4 or 5 more restaurants who want to join us for the first time.

Thank you so much to all of our soup vendors and the businesses who donated merchandise and monetary gifts to us. We could not accomplish all of this without you.

Also, THANK YOU Dan Dalpra of the Italian Fisherman for everything that you gave us and helped us with for this event. We appreciate your support of St. Susan Center!!

Souper Summer Event

St. Susan Center is celebrating our 3rd annual Souper Summer Event in Bemus Point, NY on August 18, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10.00. This entitles you to a keepsake bowl, and your choice of three different soups. There is also a silent auction, sale of soup cups and bowls, cookie sale, and a 50/50. There are 11 area restaurants who will be providing the soups. There will be live music on the floating stage and carriage rides.

BPU Cents for St Susan Center Hot Dog Sale

and donate deposit pop cans and bottle to Farm Fresh.

The smell of grilled hot dogs will fill the air from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, May 8, at Farm Fresh Foods on Fluvanna Avenue as BPU volunteers sell hotdogs and soda to benefit the “Cents for St. Susan’s” fund drive. Farm Fresh Foods will provide the food to sell so that all proceeds will go to the St. Susan Center to provide food for the needy in spring and summer this year. The public may also bring empty cans and bottles to the sale to be redeemed for the St. Susan Center.

During the BPU’s “Cents for St. Susan’s” fund drive, redeemable cans and bottles also may be taken to BPU Customer Service, 92 Steele Street, Jamestown to benefit St. Susan’s. The drive ends May 19. Checks for the drive may be written to St. Susan Center and mailed to the BPU c/o Becky Robbins, P.O. Box 700, Jamestown, NY 14702-0700. Contributions may also be left at Customer Service or in canisters placed throughout our community.

Postal Carriers Food Drive- non-perishable food items will be picked up by postal carriers. Food will be distributed to Joint Neighborhood Project, Salvation Army and St. Susan Center.

South Hills Country Club is sponsoring their third annual Memorial Golf Tournament. This year St. Susan Center will receive proceeds from event.
